SPECIAL Education PLACEMENT
In completing an elective unit looking
at Motor
Development for Children with Special Needs, I was required to complete a minimum
of 10 hours working in a school that focused on the education of children with
special needs. I had to keep a logbook, which documented my participation and
involvement at the school each week, as well as recording any specific teaching
and learning details.
During semester 2 of 2012, I spent one morning a week for the duration of five weeks at Hampden Specialist School in Terang, working with the grade three children in the school. I was a classroom helper, interacting with the children to complete the different tasks at hand, from literacy and maths to cooking and sport. I was able to gain inside knowledge of how the teacher accommodates for the learning needs of each individual child and see the difference in classroom management and planning compared to mainstream classrooms.
It was only a short duration that I was in this classroom, but I was able to get to know each of the students, and it put a smile on my face each time I left, knowing just how special and important these children really are. Completing this in-school experience increased my knowledge of working with children with disabilities, and left a special impact on me, as I found I had increased my desire in wanting to become more familiar in working with children with special needs in the future as part of my career in education.
