Pep 1: INTRODUCTION TO THE PRACTICE OF TEACHING
St Patricks Primary School, Camperdown
2011
Monday 1st August - Monday 17th October
Prep - Grade 6
Over the duration of 10 weeks, I spent one day a week observing the teaching and learning of ten different classrooms within the school, ranging from Prep to Grade 6. This professional experience enabled me to begin the transition of moving from a student to a teacher, and formed the basis in being provided with an understanding of the running of a classroom. I had the opportunity to see how the classroom routine and management differentiated throughout the school, as well as the range of teaching strategies implemented within the classrooms. In completing a range of questions and tasks that focused on the operation of a school, I was able to form the understanding of what it requires to be professionally a part of a primary school. I was provided with the chance to collect a range of resources, including the school's information booklet, literacy and numeracy resources, teacher's work programs and the schools behaviour management policy; which explained the rights and responsibilities of students, staff and parents, and classroom and individual preventative discipline strategies. I was able to see how theory is put into practice, with the ability to witness the different learning theories being implemented into the classroom. This placement was very beneficial in allowing myself to gather an initial understanding of the requirements of being a classroom teacher.
