COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PLACEMENT: COTTAGE BY THE SEA
Cottage by the Sea in Queenscliff is a charity that believes all children are entitled to a happy and healthy life. It runs a number of programs helping disadvantaged children to reach their fullest potential in life. I was lucky enough to complete my Community Engagement placement at Cottage by the Sea, where I spent three nights at the camp, being a volunteer to look after the eleven children undertaking the camp, aged from 6-12 years old. There were a number of activities that were undertaken over the four days including going for walks, swimming at the beach, watching movies, arts and crafts, obstacle course, and playing various sports with the children.
After being involved at Cottage by
the Sea, it helped me realise that each child has a different
background and there are many that suffer disadvantages due to their particular background.
I know that I may experience children in my own classroom who will not have
the same privileges as their peers. Through interacting with the
children on this camp, I became more confident in working with disadvantaged children and assisting them to
achieve their greatest potential in life.
My reflection on my time spent at Cottage by the Sea:
I was able to successfully interact with each child who attended the camp, and was able to get to know the type of people they are, including their interests in life. Through interacting with the children continuously over the four days, I feel I have made somewhat of an impact on their lives, giving them an outlook on life that will hopefully allow for their future lives to head in the right direction. I am very grateful of being able to undertake this Community Engagement and provide an input into the lives of disadvantaged individuals.
