PEP 4: REFINEMENT AND EXTENSION OF TEACHING SKILLS
St Mary's Primary School, Geelong
2013
18th November - 13th December
Grade 1/2
This four week block provided me with the opportunity to refine as well as extend my skills in teaching. I was able to improve my ability to professionally plan lessons through being responsible for the learning programs within the grade 1/2 classroom for a number of continuous whole days. I was part of an open learning environment, which meant that the two grade 1/2 classes combined to undertake some of their learning. I was in control for both classes for the literacy unit, which involved reading and writing tasks. I was able to develop a good relationship with all school staff, and got to know some of the parents of the students I was teaching also. This experience also allowed me to form behaviour management strategies into the classroom, such as using the 'traffic light system' in order to monitor the behaviour of students.
The following lists some of the topics of lessons in which I planned and presented:
Literacy: When reading groups were conducted, I had the task of working with two different groups, focusing on a specific text type, and analysing and interpreting the meaning behind the text. The writing tasks varied each week, with examples including informative writing and writing in response to a story.
Mathematics: I taught maths lessons which covered a number of different mathematical topics, including time, counting, addition and subtraction, multiplication. A number of different resources were used within these lessons, including iPads, computers and board games.
Drug Education: I implemented a unit of work into the classroom focused on Drug Education. The children were introduced to the reasons as to why we take medicine when sick, the type of medicine, as well as focusing on the concept of healthy versus unhealthy.
Religious Education: As the time was approaching to Christmas, I gave children the opportunity to focus on the story of the birth of Jesus, including performing a role play of Jesus' birth.
Physical Education: I was provided with the opportunity to be in control of physical education lessons, one of which involved both 1/2 classes, and included playing a number of different games.
