PEP 2: Introduction to the practice of teaching
St Patricks Primary School, Port Fairy
2012
8 single days: March 5th - May 16th
3 week block: Monday June 12th - Friday June 19th
Grade 5/6
Undertaking this professional experience allowed me to begin my development of becoming a teacher, as I was able to develop basic teaching and organisation skills, increase my confidence in teaching and learning interactions and establish professional relationships with the school's staff. I completed 8 single days in the grade 5/6 classroom, where I observed the teacher and their approach to teaching and learning, became familiar with the students and their learning abilities as well as beginning to form relationships with the staff. I then completed a three week block where I had to plan, implement and evaluate a minimum of 20 lessons into the grade 5/6 classroom. I ensured that I reflected on each lesson I taught, in terms of the way I conducted myself as a teacher throughout the lesson, and how the students performed and were engaged throughout the lesson. In completing lesson reflections, I was able to understand the importance of ensuring that teaching and learning is thoroughly evaluated and assessed in order to improve teaching and learning outcomes within the classroom. This placement assisted me in developing essential skills that I require in order to be a successful future educator, especially in terms of lesson planning, preparation and presentation, organising and managing students, professional relationships with school staff and classroom interactions with students. Most importantly, it allowed me to begin my development of having a self-image as a teacher.
The following lists the content in which I was able to teach as part of this professional experience:
Literacy: I planned and taught a literacy unit, which focused on the movie, Bridge to Terabithia, where the students were able to complete a number of different literacy tasks which focused on this particular narrative.
Mathematics: area of irregular and regular shapes, data displays, graphs, and division.
ICT: Students had the opportunity to use computers, in order to create their own Voki.
Physical Education: Implementing different games in order to ensure all students were physically active.
